Common Troubleshooting
Common issues you may hit when using the Tagging module, and how to resolve each one.
Cannot remove an inherited tag from a VM
Symptom: The tag's checkbox is disabled in the Remove Tags wizard or the Manage tags drawer. It shows "Inherited from {cluster} — remove at cluster."
Cause: The tag is inherited from a K8S Cluster. Inherited tags cannot be removed at the VM level.
Solution:
- Identify the cluster name from the tooltip or the "Inherited from" note.
- Go to Tagging → Tags tab → find the tag → click it.
- In the Tag Detail panel, review the resource list → find the source K8S Cluster.
- Use the Remove Tags wizard, select that K8S Cluster → remove the tag. The tag automatically disappears from all member VMs.
Policy runs but the status is PARTIAL
Symptom: Execution History shows the Partial status, and there are Skipped resources in the Run details.
Common causes:
- Policy action = Replace existing tags, scope = Instance: some VMs have tags inherited from a K8S Cluster — inherited tags cannot be replaced.
- Policy scope = K8S Cluster: the cluster has no member VMs.
Solution:
- Open the Run details (click the result link in the history row) → read the Note column for each Skipped resource.
- If it is due to inheritance: this is expected behavior. Inherited tags cannot be replaced.
- If the cluster has no VMs: re-check the cluster's membership.
The "Run now" button is disabled
Symptom: The Run now button appears grayed out and cannot be clicked.
Cause: The policy is in the Inactive state.
Solution: Click the Active toggle on the policy card to enable it again. The Run now button activates immediately.
Selecting resources in the wizard resets the selection
Symptom: While selecting multiple Instances, clicking one more resource clears your entire previous selection.
Cause: You clicked a resource of a different type. Assign Tags and Remove Tags only allow you to select one resource type at a time.
Solution: Select the correct resource-type tab first, then select the resources.
A newly created tag does not appear in the Assign Tags wizard
Symptom: The tag is in the Tags tab but does not show up in the wizard's "Choose Tags" step.
Cause: The wizard's cache or filter has not updated.
Solution: Search for the tag name in the wizard's search box. If it still does not appear, reload the page and try again.
The Resources tab shows only "0" values
Symptom: Every resource type shows 0 tagged, 0 untagged.
Cause: The selected VPC has no resources, or the resources have not synced yet.
Solution: Select a different VPC from the dropdown. If you just created the resources, wait a few seconds for the system to update.
Not all resources appear in the "Resources tagged" drawer
Symptom: The drawer shows the banner "Showing X of Y resources due to limited permissions."
Cause: Your account does not have permission to view all of the resources using this tag.
Solution: Contact your organization administrator to be granted additional view permissions.
