What is a GPU?

A Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a processor built for parallel processing and high memory bandwidth, used for specialized tasks like accelerated graphics rendering and simultaneous computation. GPUs are essential for gaming, 3D image processing, video editing, cryptocurrency mining, and machine learning — they're significantly faster and more efficient than CPUs at large-scale numerical computation.

Why GPUs matter on Kubernetes

As deep learning models advance, demand for GPUs has grown fast as technology companies invest heavily in AI. Tools like ChatGPT and other language, image, and video processing tools rely heavily on AI processing power, and GPUs are why they're possible — which is why major technology companies want GPU capacity to meet growing AI demand.

GPUs outperform CPUs in deep learning because training is highly resource-intensive: many cores and high memory bandwidth make the process significantly more efficient than on a CPU.

Kubernetes pairs well with GPUs for AI. More data scientists choose Kubernetes to optimize training and deploying AI models because of automated deployment, easy scaling, a large active community, and broad feature support.
