Secret

A Secret is the unit that stores confidential information in Key/Value format inside a Secret Engine. Each Secret can hold multiple Key/Value pairs and supports versioning, so you can track its change history.

Overview

  • Format: a Secret stores one or more Key/Value pairs under a single name.
  • Versioning: every update to a Secret's value creates a new version — nothing is overwritten, so you can trace how a value changed over time.
  • Access control: a Policy scopes which Secret paths a user or application can read, write, or delete.
  • Lifecycle: deleting a Secret removes every version of it. See Delete a Secret before you delete one.
